The historic mediaeval town of Óbidos is one of the most beautiful towns in Portugal. The ancient castle with its imposing towers and the defensive walls that encircle the town dominate the town’s skyline. The narrow cobbled streets with white washed houses draped in bougainvillaea’s, the presence of many churches and chapels and an ancient well preserved aqueduct speak about the town’s rich history that today attracts many tourists all the year round.

With the offer of Obidos as a wedding present from King Dinis to his new wife Queen Isabel, the town passed into the ownership of the Casa das Rainhas ( House of Queens) and most queens of Portugal spent time in Obidos, leaving behind valuable bequests.

Amongst the most visited sites of Obidos is Porta da Villa (the main gateway) giving access to the town. Inside the double walled gate one can admire a curious oratory with an alter in gold coloured woodcarving. One the gate’s ceiling is a remarkable fresco lined hand painted blue tiles. Igreja de Santa Maria , the main church of Obidos, original architecture dates back to the 12th and 16th centuries. The current appearance results from a restoration carried out in the 17th century. Inside is a church with 3 navels, with beautiful paintings on the ceiling and blue and white tiles. The marvelous sculpturing in white limestone of the tomb by Don Joao and his wife cannot be overlooked. Also noteworthy is the pipe organ. Igreja de Sao Pedro, originally an gothic basilica, was destroyed in an earthquake in 1755 leaving only the main altar and bell tower. It was later ingeniously rebuilt with a superlative retable of Sao Pedro.

If you’d like to know more about the historic heritage of Obidos, stop by at the tourist office on Rua Direita 87 (the main street of Obidos). There you can collect leaflets about Obidos or order a guided tour.

The contemporary Obidos attracts visitors not only to see the heritage of the times long gone. Each year Obidos organizes a number of festivals. Amongst the most popular are The International chocolate festival (presenting chocolate sculptures, chocolate contests, shows) held in March, Opera Festival in August takes place at the Obidos Castle and Lagoon Festival held in July, when local fishermen and their families prepare meals with different tastes and textures of the Lagoon, namely eels, clams and mussels.
