"Bairro Alto" is known as one of the most attractive and picturesque areas of the Lisbon’s city centre. At night, this 17th century colourful district is transformed into the city's vibrant night life quarter. The main streets and narrow passageways are bustling with activity of many  excellent traditional restaurants, fado singing houses, cafés, and sleek clubs and bars that stay open until late at night. Recently, Bairro Alto has become an alternative shopping destination  for those looking for trendy design shops, art galleries and book stores.

There are several buses, trams and subway less than 5 minutes away although one can easily walk to the main points of interest of the city. After a two minute walk you will be in the heart of the glamorous and cosmopolitan Chiado, a place where the "new" and "old" live in harmony. Characterized by casual-chic atmosphere, with streets full of shops, fine restaurants, cobblestones, historical churches and timeless cafes, Chiado makes any visitor feel real Lisbon.

This tourist area of Lisbon begins at the Brasileira café, on Rua Garretta. Next to it, two churches remind us of the vanished towers of Santa Catarina Gate. The Church of Loreto is one of the landmarks  to visit ion Chiado, next to the Church of Encarnação. Luís de Camões square, which any Lisboner will call Largo Camões, is not just a passing place. Sit on the steps of the poet's monument and enjoy the bustle that Chiado has. But do not leave Chiado without inquiring about the theatres. To mention a couple of them, São Luiz Municipal Theatre was one of Lisbon's first cinemas. Today it is a municipal theatre with a rich and varied program.  Also have a glimpse at the Teatro Trindade and the S. Carlos Opera House.

Chiado is also one of the city´s best shopping areas. You will find there renowned international brands next to great Portuguese designers.

There are several art schools in the area, like the Fine Arts Faculty. Even if you are not an expert, venture into the Chiado Museum - National Museum of Contemporary Art (Rua Serpa Pinto, 4). Besides well-cared exhibitions, it has a pleasant patio to have lunch or simply sip a coffee. There is also a big offer for meals Chiado also has great offer of restaurants: Café Royale, New Wok and Kaffee Hause are excellent choices.

Lisbon is Portugal's capital and a vivid place where history meets the presence. The history is well preserved, and it’s easy to find pieces of old tales on every corner and cobbled streets of its historic centre. But it’s also the present that fascinates so many visitors, and that makes it one of the best cities to visit. Lisbon is a modern, vibrant and cosmopolitan city, host of major events, and a true capital of culture, fashion, shopping, arts, gastronomy, sports, and much more!

You can blend into the Portuguese ancient soul while listening to the Fado music, stroll through the cobbled streets of the Baixa district, visit Belem to taste the famous Pastel de Nata, watch the life of the city from one of the many wine bars and savour the atmosphere. Excellent (and many to choose from )  golf courses can be found within minutes from the city – so why not combine a city trip with a few days of golf?
